A yule log or bûche de Noël is a traditional dessert served near Christmas, especially in France and several other francophone countries and former French colonies. It can be considered a type of sweet roulade.
The traditional bûche is made from a genoise or other sponge cake, generally baked in a large, shallow Swiss roll pan, frosted, rolled to form a cylinder, and frosted again on the outside. The most common combination is a basic yellow sponge cake, frosted and filled with chocolate buttercream; however, many variations on the traditional recipe exist.
The name bûche de Noël originally refers to the yule log itself.
These cakes are often decorated with powdered sugar to resemble snow, tree branches, fresh berries, and mushrooms made of meringue. A log-shaped cake traditionally prepared for the Christmas festivities.
This is a light sponge cake roll which is garnished with either chocolate, mocha or chestnut filling.
It is then covered with chocolate icing, raked with a serrated knife or fork to give it a “woody” texture and decorated with candied fruit and nuts.
On the Christmas Eve in many European countries to bring home a very large piece of firewood that would be sprinkled with oil, salt and wine and placed in the hearth, where it would burn over several days. As time passed the large hearths were slowly replaced by stoves these fires died out and the bûche de Noël was replaced by the “edible” version known today.
So it is typically prepared on Christmas Eve, bûche de Noël is served to all.
