What is a ' Luster Dust ' powder in cooking?
A food decorating powder that provides a metallic or pearl-like reflective quality to cookies and sweets when lightly sprinkled over the surface of the food. Made from titanium dioxide, iron oxide and mica, Luster Dust is a powder often used by cake decorators or bakeries to enhance the appearance of the baked goods, giving various foods a luster or sheen. Although Luster Dust is approved by the FDA for use in decorating foods and has been in existence for many years, it is a powder that some believe is not healthy to consume. Luster Dust is available in food stores which sell cake decorating materials.
