An apple a day keeps the doctor away! This is a saying that has stayed with us for many years. It is believed to have come from an ancient Roman proverb.  The Romans truly believed the apple had magical powers to cure illnesses.
One of the most popular quotations of the 19th Century was
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Before the 20th century there was no food pyramid or someone to announce the importance of five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. People simply recognized the healthy attributes of the apple.
We've all heard this line before, right? An apple a day keeps the doctor away. If it's so easy to stay healthy just by eating an apple a day, why are so many people not doing it? Apples contain Flavonoids that help lower the risk of disease. Easy on the digestion their high fiber content adds bulk, which aids the digestive process, making elimination natural and comfortable. It has also been suggested by Cornell University researchers that apples protects brain cells against disorders like Alzheimer's Disease.
Eating an apple when craving for candy or chocolate can make the desire disappear since apple in itself contains sugar, but gives you only ¼ of the calories.
The truth in the old adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away".
So all you have to do is make sure that the apple is included as one of the five portions of fruit and vegetables you eat each day.
