À la carte can also refer to a menu in which the items are thus presented.
A la carte dining is an alternative to other common forms of eating out. The approach is different from buffet dining, where the guest pays one flat fee and is free to eat anything that is found on the buffet table.
One of the main advantages of a la carte dining is that it allows each guest to order as much or as little food as desired. Someone who is on a diet may choose to order a salad, an entrée, and one side. This helps to minimize the temptation to eat more.
A Tasting menu is a special menu offered in many fine dining establishments. It can be an opportunity for restaurant guests to have a nibble of almost all dishes offered at a restaurant, or it can be a way for a chef to demonstrate all that he/she is worth by creating small and innovative dishes that aren’t on the regular menu. Usually the tasting menu is what is called prix fixe or set price. This means people pay a single price to get to explore everything that is on the tasting menu, instead of ordering a la carte, and “everything” may be quite a few small dishes.

One of the most common type of a Buffet is known as the all-you-can-eat buffet, is more free-form: customers pay a fixed fee and can then help themselves to as much food as they wish to eat in a single meal. This form is found often in restaurants, especially in hotels.
Traditional restaurant service used to begin with a customer ordering his or her meal from items listed on a menu.
The restaurant controlled the selection and portion sizes in order to maximize the profit from each plate served. With the advent of buffet meals in which generally a self-service form of dining and the customer pays a fixed price and is entitled to select as much food as he or she wishes.
